The demolition
The old kitchen is out! I feel so alive!
The day started early and ran like a well-oiled machine.
We had rented a last minute storage box for our furniture which we finished packing at about 11pm the night before. As we’re in a townhouse, we only have one small parking lot in front of the house and no rear access, so our little driveway is premium real estate right now.
The storage box was collected at 6:30am to make way for a dumpster, then the electrician and plumber arrived around 7:30am to disconnect the gas, water and power.
By around 8:30am, the kitchen team from Häcker were in removing the old kitchen and by 11:30am it was all done! About as noisy as you’d expect but suprisingly tidy.
There was only one sketchy moment when the truck driver was struggling to get back out without hitting our neighbours cars – we tried door knocking but nobody answered, so short of towing them, the pressure was on the driver to make it work. After about a million micro turns he managed to squeeze past them (real-life Austin-powers moment)
Next step is for the floors to be removed and slab preparation. We’re yet to find out what condition the slab is in, but it should hopefully only take a few days to grind and level it.
Next week it will be the rough-in of the electricity and plumbing and plastering up that messy wall.
The big question mark is the plumbing – see those pipes running along the ground? Well they need to be hidden somehow, because in the new design, there is nowhere for them to hide.
There’s also the lovely feature of the temper valve for the hot water being in the middle of where our dishwasher should go. Something dodgy must’ve happened when this house was signed off 20 years ago because that is supposed to be outside within 2 meters of our hot water service which is outside lol. Plumber thinks we can find a solution though (hopefully not an expensive one but we’re along for the ride now so que sera sera I guess ha)
