Getting Crispy Edges and Tender Centers
After testing different ways to cook edamame, the biggest difference comes down to managing moisture. Shelled edamame can turn crisp around the edges with a slightly chewy center, but only if it’s dried well first, while pods stay tender inside and develop a lightly crisp exterior. The soy sauce added halfway through gives the edamame a deeper savory flavor and a little caramelization without making it soggy. Like crispy chickpeas, these are best enjoyed straight from the air fryer while they’re still warm and crunchy.
Instructions
Follow along with this step-by-step guide to make your Air Fryer Edamame. Youโll find all the exact times, temperatures, and measurements in the recipe card below.

Step One: Season the edamame and spread it into the air fryer/oven so the beans cook evenly.

Step Two: Air fry, stirring occasionally, until the edamame starts to look lightly golden around the edges.

Step Three: Drizzle in the soy sauce partway through cooking and stir to coat. It will caramelize slightly as the edamame finishes cooking.

Step Four: Once the edamame is hot and crisp, finish with any extra seasonings or toppings and serve right away for the best texture.

Storage
Store leftover edamame in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The texture will soften as it sits, so for the best results, reheat it in the air fryer for a few minutes until warmed through and lightly crisp again. This recipe is best enjoyed fresh on the day it’s made.
Expert Tips

If you’re using shelled edamame, let it sit for 2-3 minutes after air frying. The edges continue to firm up slightly as the surface steam escapes, giving you a crispier finish.
FAQ
If you’re using shelled edamame, excess moisture is usually the cause. Pat it dry well before air frying and avoid overcrowding the basket.
Yes. Shelled edamame should be thawed and dried first, while pods can go into the air fryer straight from frozen.
Shelled edamame becomes crisper and slightly chewy, while pods stay more tender inside with a lightly crisp exterior. Both work well, but the texture is different.
